Windows 10 on late 2009 iMac
When installed Windows 10 via Bootcamp on my late 2009 model iMac, I wasn’t able to install the Bootcamp drivers. Apple had hard-coded some versions and they rather sell you new hardware than supporting the older hardware. Since my late 2009 iMac is upgraded with memory and SSD, the 27″ monster is still fast enough for day-time use. But when installing Bootcamp drivers, this error appears:
This version of boot camp is not intended for this computer model
The fix is simple. After downloading the Bootcamp (v5.1) drivers via OSX, boot to Windows. Start an elevated command box and navigate to the path of your drivers. Copy the files from the USB disk over to your harddisk. In my case the path was: Downloads\bootcamp5.1.5769\BootCamp\Drivers\Apple.
Manually run: “msiexec /i bootcamp.msi” from there. The new Bootcamp drivers will be installed and yes, you Magic Mouse scroll-funtion will work again.
Firstly, thank you very much for this post, I am in the same situation (beefed up late 2019 imac which I love).
I just downloaded bootcamp drivers (5.1.5769) from the apple site and ran the BootCamp.msi file, as instructed. It worked, and sound now works. I had to uninstall/reinstall the bluetooth keyboard.
The keyboard F-buttons do not work for brightness/volume, etc. My suspicion is that this is because the drivers (5.1.5769) are from 2015, and designed to target the Late 2014 iMac specifically.
May I ask why you settled on this particular driver, and not an earlier one?
Thanks again,
I installed the stock windows 7 boot camp (4.0.4033) using windows 7 compatibility mode. Keyboard now works. video/audio work in skype classic, but not in the new Skype.
Thanks again,
firstly thank you for the instruction, i already installed bootcamp5.1.5769 as your instruction but only the scrolling till now not working on my Windows 10 Home.
Under Mac OS (High Sierra 10.13.6) my magic mouse everything running well including scrolling (not problem)..
i use iMac late 2009 21,5 inch
On my Windows firstly installed Win 7 Home Basic 64bit and then upgrade to Win 10 Home 64bit (Windows 10 version 1809)
Keyboard wireless generation 1 and Apple Magic Mouse generation 2.
I was installed Bootcamp4.0.4033 but not working at all (i use Brigadier-master to get that bootcamp) but i try downloads from Apple support too and still not working too.
Is the GPU supported in Windows 10 x64?
What version of Win10? 1603? 1809? 1903?
Thank you 🙂
The GPU (HD 4850M) is not supported in Windows 10 on Bootcamp. I am running Win 10 1809 and have display device disabled in Device Manager on Windows 10 and it works reasonably well. I don’t use gaming so not really an issue. I am going to try an upgrade GPU HD 6970M which I understand is support in OSX on this hardware. I might be able to get Win drivers to work with that.
Hi Darren
Did it work with 6970M?
I have also installed win10 on late 2009.
When connecting to internet automatic updates does something with my display driver.
I get black screen.
So I have set gpedit.msc not to update display.
I then just use win built in standard driver.
It works but I cant adjust display light and it runs for full power.
I’m afraid it gets to hot and destroy my GPU
THANKS!! I GOT SOUND RIGHT NOW!!
